Kindergarten / Grade 1

Below you will find a variety of themes and lessons that I have found are great for Elementary classes.

Petit Poisson Blanc - A story about a little fish who can't find his mother. A great jumping off point for colours. This video is a bit hard to see, but if you google the title, there a so many wonderful worksheets available online to print for free.

Belle Pieuvre - This is a song I found on one of my favorite French teacher sites. Googling "je chante avec Paola" will lead you to a wealth of videos you can use in your classes. This one is titled Belle Pieuvre. This video is my first grade class. I drew the pictures and divided the class into groups where they coloured them and practiced their "lines".

Here is the original version.

Le Jardin

One of the most successful units to use with the younger students is planting and gardening. Below is an image of a short activity I did with one of my first grade classes. Students collected magazines and cut out images of things they wanted to plant in their gardens.

La Chenille qui Fait des Trous

These are the words to the class hit entitled, "Qu'est-ce que tu fais?" It means, "what are you doing?"

Bonjour, _______________ qu'est-ce que tu fais?

Je danse
Je chante
Je marche
Je mange
J'Ă©coute
Je saute
Je regarde
Je nage
Je lit
Je court
Je pense

Our latest exercises in class have been all about building vocabulary. We are trying to master about 25 words in a series of categories including food, body parts, clothing, etc. This will set the groundwork for the sentences and short stories we will work on in second grade. We are using the website below to introduce some of the words. Please consider using it at home to reinforce the vocabulary.

I often show the children videos on the Smartboard at the end of class. A recent favorite is a group of videos on the website www.mondedespetits.fr. They all introduce basic vocabulary, and are a bit more interactive than other videos I have seen, in that they ask the children questions and give them a few seconds to respond before telling them the answer. I also like the fact that site is for French children, and so it has a very authentic French feel. You may notice that the text in the videos is written in script, which is something I have always found fascinating about French children's books. They are often written in French.

  • Je mange / Je bois

We are learning about things we MANGE! Here is a video about one chenille qui mange beaucoup.
